Key verse | Romans 12:1

Offer Your Bodies as a Living Sacrifice

"Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship."

We learned about Christianism in Romans chapters 1 through 11. We can say that doctrine is a frame of faith. Romans chapter 12 teaches us how to apply the doctrines we have learned in real life, which is dealing with action. Through today's speech, I pray that we will learn: first, the attitude we should have towards God (1-2); second, the attitude we should have among the saints one another (3-13); third, the attitude we should have about the people of the world (14-21).

First, the attitude we should have towards God (1, 2). Look at verse 1. "Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship." We were the slaves of Satan and the children of darkness due to the sin in the past. We refused God and lived as we sat on God’s place. Everything was self-centered. But by the grace of God, we believed in Jesus, repented, and forgiven. By faith, we gained righteousness, became the children of God, and entered the world of light. Knowing the love of God, we have lived with him as our owner. All these things have come to God's mercy.

How should we live now that God's compassion has given us a new life?  "Offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God" Here the body means “the whole man”. It means to give our parts to God as a weapon of righteousness. In order to give an offering, we should actually kill the sacrifice. But we have to offer a living sacrifice. This means that our bodies are alive, but we must be completely obedient to God, as if we were animals that died and were offered to God. A ‘holy living sacrifice’ means a life in which you stop sinning and commit your life to God, which means a dedicated life. The word ‘holy’ means to be distinct from the world. It means to live a life that is distinguished for the glory of God, not for the glory of oneself or the pride of this world. We must live in God's glory, whether we eat or drink, not just in Sundays, but all week long,. This is our true and proper worship.
How can we give our lives to the spiritual worship of God? If you see verse 2, it says, "Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will." 1 John 2:16 says, "For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world." 2 Timothy  3:2-5 describes the features of the end of the world: "2 People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, 4 treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God— 5 having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people." We should not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of our mind. The mind means our consideration or thoughts. That's why we have to change our thoughts.
It says: "The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure.” (Jeremiah 17:9). We should not follow Satan, who lives as himself in the center for the sake of the lust of the body, the desire of the eyes, and the pride of the life,  and should not follow the sounds of the world, but live toward the life of God as center of our hearts and what He expects from us. This requires putting God at the center of our thoughts. It is necessary to distinguish between the sounds of the world and the sounds of God through words. In order to be transformed, you must repent your self-centered, worldly values and receive the fullness of the Holy Spirit. When you have fullness of words and Holy Spirit and approve what God’s will is, you can have true worship given by God.

I learned about the discerning life through having daily bread this week. When Jesus and his disciples went to Martha and Mary's house, Martha was busy preparing food. She did not have enough hours in a day. But her younger sister, Mary, sat at the feet of the Lord and was listening to His words. Martha was angry, because her sister was not helping her. She went to Jesus and asked Mary to help her. Jesus answered, "You are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her." Mary discerned what the Lord was most pleased about now and chose to listen. We should not be distracted by what we have to do and leave listening God’s words and gaining life behind. I pray that we have the discernment to choose what is better, thinking that one is enough, rather than worrying and being upset in many things. Even we have a lot of work to do on Sundays, I pray for one thing, that the river of grace will overflow in us by worshipping with Divine Spirit and truth. In these difficult times, we believe that we will yield abundant fruit when words and grace through the Holy Spirit are in our midst and in our homes.

Second, the attitude of the Christians one another(3-13). What should we think about ourselves in interpersonal relationships? Look at verse 3. "For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you." We must not think more highly than we deserve, because those thoughts give birth to action. We must think of ourselves with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of us. We should have humble hearts in front of our brothers and sisters. We have to treat others better than “I” do and learn. An arrogant mind is the thought and judgment of oneself in the position of God. We must be within our means according to the faith God has distributed to each of us. The community can be united and rejoice in God when each of us is in each own place and humbled. And God bless and cherish such community.

God has given each of us gifts according to His will. Instead of comparing it with others, we should think about how to serve and enrich the Church, the body of Christ, through God’s gift. We have to recognize as members of the body, if we want to think within our means. All believers are members of the church community with Jesus as their head. Our bodies are made up of many parts. All body parts play their own role in organic relationships. All believers are indispensable to the church. There is no one who is not precious, even though they may not be in the spotlight. Therefore, we should acknowledge each other as members and be equal and valued.

"6 We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your[a] faith; 7 if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; 8 if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead,[b] do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.” (6-8). There is not a single person without a gift. While working with the pastors and students, I'm often amazed at their gifts and abilities. If you work hard on what you have to do now, you'll find out that it is a gift. If we work hard to fulfill what we are supposed to do before asking what I have received, we realize that it is God's gift.

God has given to some men a gift of Prophecies. Prophecies are not like fortune tellers to match a person's future. We interpret on the side of God what has happened between the words and the will of God. Some are given a gift of serving. There are many things to serve in the church. You have to clean up, make food, pray at church, lead worship and serve with musical instruments. God has given many people the gift of serving. He also gave to some people gift of teaching. We received a gift of wisdom and knowledge because we study the Bible a lot. That is why there are many great Bible teachers. Some people received a gift of encouragement. Some received a gift of salvation, some received a gift of ruling, and some received a gift of mercy. These are gifts given from God in order to serve the church. Since it is a gift from God, we should not compare it to anyone else or brag about it. We should acknowledge each other's gifts and encourage and help each other to perform well. The more you use, the more the gift shines, but if you don't, it disappears. When I actively use the gift God has given me, the meaning of my presence in the church comes to mind. And through my gift, the church becomes more abundant. I pray that the meeting will be more fruitful through the gift God has given each of us
The motive for using gifts must be love for siblings. The most important virtue within the church community is love as well as humility. Look at verses 9 and 10. "9 Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. 10 Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves." There is no false in love. I saw clearly how much harm lies bring to us in this Corona 19 incident. Shincheonji Church has damaged countless people when it was done naturally in the name of a false plot. True love is with truth. We must hate what is evil and cling to what is good. You have to be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. When you love each other first, the community will be full of life. You should never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. It's easy for us to loosen up by having a family worship. It's easy to do a proper worship at home without getting nervous. But we must serve God with spiritual fervor and zeal. "Never be lacking in zeal" means "stay hot in Holy Spirit" in Greek original text. It means to be filled with the Holy Spirit and be guided by the Holy Spirit. Among the evil human nature there are greed and laziness. Laziness is a hotbed of sin. When Jesus comes back, He judges us praising some as for being good and loyal and blaming some as for being evil and lazy. We become passionate when God is with us.

Look at the verse 12. "Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer." We are all in the midst of difficulties due to Corona 19. However, we should be joyful in hope of passing through, patient in affliction, and faithful in prayer. We hope to have a family worship during the week after that and try to be in peace. We should also share with the Lord’s people who are in need, practice hospitality.
Third, the relationship between believers and the world (14-21). Look at  verse 14. "Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse." How can we bless those who persecute us? There is evil within the persecuted, but he is also a slave of evil. He doesn't know what he's doing. He needs to find himself and be saved. To this end, we must pray like Jesus and Stephen, for the persecuted.

Look at verse 17. " Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone." In verse 20, he says, "On the contrary: “If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.” " And in verse 21, he says, "Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good." Good is to bless even though it is persecuted; evil hates and curses itself for persecuting. It is evil to avenge one's own grudge, and love is to give mercy by providing food and something to drink even to the enemy. We must distinguish between personal and social enemies. Since God is righteous, He wants the community to be overflowing with good faith. God Himself judges evil. And there's a law enforcement agency, and it's on behalf of the wrong people. If individuals judge and avenge themselves, the world will soon become lawless. The powerful will prevail and the weak will stay as if they were dead.

What should we do to prevent a vicious circle of revenge? You must overcome evil with good. If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink. In doing this, you should heap burning coals on his head. This means to keep your face warm from embarrassment. If he has no love in his heart, he lives but resembles as the dead. In particular, the hearts of the children of God, who have been saved by the blood of Jesus, must be filled with the love of God. You must love God and love your neighbor with a heart touched by His love. Evil can only be overcome by good. The only way to change an evil man is to love him. It is love that is the completion of the law to shame even the enemy (13:10).

In conclusion, I pray that we will have the opportunity to look back on ourselves and to love and serve each other in these difficult times. Not only do we offer a good Sunday service, but I pray that life will be a worship service. I pray that the river of grace overflows and God gives us abundant words and the fullness of the Holy Spirit. I pray that this week will be a week where we know what is to please God.
