Life led by the Spirit of God
“For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God.”
In Chapter 7, we learned that evil is with me even though I am saved and doing good. The will to do good and the desire for sin are playing tug-of-war inside. In this situation, we are willing to take on the desire of sin and do good, but fail again and again. Even Apostle Paul lamented this reality (7:24). So should we live in this kind of mourning all the time? Today's statement teaches you how to overcome the desire of sin and live a holy life as a solution.
Look at verse 1. “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus” ‘no condemnation’ includes not only freedom from responsibility for sin, but also freedom from power of sin. Of course, the absence of condemnation does not mean that even if you commit a sin, there are no inner pain and mourning. The purer our conscience becomes, the more sensitive we become to sin. So we feel ashamed of small sin. We discover how imperfect we are. Sometimes, it haunts us with the sins we have committed in the past. Even after salvation, the law still points out our sins and causes our hearts to repent. However, it will not condemn us for our sins and bring us to justice. This is because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set us free from the law of sin and death. Jesus has already paid the consequence of our sins. Therefore, no matter what our past is or what our present looks like, we should not condemn ourselves. Whenever we think of our sins, we must think of the grace of Jesus' blood and enter it. Since the law of the Spirit who gives life is much stronger than the law of sin and death, it can set us free. And the law of the Spirit who gives life rules and leads people who are saved.
Look verses 3-4. “For what the law was powerless to do because it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.” We can move on to God only if we obey the law. However, because of the flesh that is faithful to the demands of sin, we cannot obey the law. Therefore, the law cannot give life and freedom to humans, because it was weakened by the flesh. However, God does what the law was powerless to do. First, God sent His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh into the middle of the earth. Then, He imputed all the sins of man on the body and crucified Him for those sins. Through this, He freed us from the law of sin and death. He also sent the Holy Spirit to provide a spiritual environment to overcome the desire of sin and live a holy life. He also gives a spiritual wish to live a holy life like fire. As a result, we gained the ability to follow the Spirit without following the flesh. So how can we live a religious life by winning and being led by Holy Spirit?
First, we should have our minds set on what the Spirit desires. (5-8)
Look verses 5-6. “Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace.” From here ‘Those who live according to the flesh’ refers to those who have not been reborn. These people live in the nature of the flesh. They speak and act according to their feelings. There is no God, but themselves at the center of their thoughts. They always think about themselves and act on their own. Specifically, Galatians chapter 5, verse 19-21 says “19 The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20 idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21 and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.” Such mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God and cannot please Him. That is why those who live according to the flesh can never enter the kingdom of God. On the other hand, those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. The Holy Spirit never shows up or brags. The Holy Spirit always thinks and works around God. It works in the joys of God. The Holy Spirit makes us realize about sin, righteousness, and judgment. More importantly, It helps us to understand and accept who Jesus is and what He has done. It tries to testify Him. In Philippians chapter 1 verse 20 Apostle Paul said, "I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way be ashamed, but will have sufficient courage so that now as always Christ will be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death.” There is life and peace within those who think and act on God and Jesus.
However it is not that those who live in accordance with the Spirit, will follow only the work of Spirit. We often come up with our mind governed by flesh, because we are wearing flesh. Negative, distrustful, fateful and defeated thoughts penetrate our hearts. Every time we do that, we have to get rid of these thoughts and change them to spiritual thoughts. The Holy Spirit is a person of character, is sensitive and delicate. We must acknowledge the existence of the Holy Spirit and let It assert us. Then the Holy Spirit claims our hearts and thoughts. The Holy Spirit makes us think godly in the depths of our hearts, love God, and live for God. The Holy Spirit gives Holy wish, because It is Holy. So when you live a life according to the Holy Spirit, you have spiritual thoughts, words, and actions, and eventually you grow into a spiritual person. We bear nine fruits of the Holy Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. So we need to look at ourselves to see if we're still living in the body's way, and if we're still living in accordance with the Holy Spirit.
Second, by the Spirit we should put to death the misdeeds of the body. (9-13)
Look at verse 9. "You, however, are not in the realm of the flesh but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ." When we believe in Jesus and are saved, God's Spirit dwells in us. The Spirit of God is the Holy Spirit and the Spirit of Christ. If the Spirit lives in us, we will be in the realm of the Spirit, not in the realm of flesh. And we will live a life under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. If a man does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not a true Christian. A true Christian is a person who lives in accordance with the Holy Spirit's guide. The life of faith must be a life which the Holy Spirit rules and leads me, not living by my own plans. Let's read verse 10 altogether. "But if Christ is in you, then even though your body is subject to death because of sin, the Spirit gives life[d] because of righteousness." Before that, the Holy Spirit said that It dwells in us, but here it says that Christ lives in us. And this could be said that God lives in us. Our bodies grow old, get sick and die from sin. It's natural for our bodies to get old and sick. But because the Spirit is in us, our spirits are alive and refreshed, even though the body is getting old and decrepit. You throw away the old and you take in the new. As the days go by, our insides grow mature and beautiful. Internal beauty is revealed externally through words, expressions, and actions. So even though youth is beautiful, but old age is even more beautiful. But how ugly would it be if only the outside person got older and the inner maturity didn't work? I pray that the inner man will be refreshed and beautiful day by day through life that follows the Holy Spirit in Jesus Christ.
See verse 11 “And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you.” Our bodies get old and sick and die, but they don't end up there. On the last day, God will resurrect our dead bodies through the Holy Spirit. In 1 Corinthians chapter 15 describes specifically about the resurrection of the body. Our present body is a sinful, weak, and old body that will be decayed. But in the second coming of Jesus, God will change our dead body into resurrected body that will live forever in heaven. On that day our bodies will neither be old, nor weak, nor sick. Of course they will not be tempted by sin, but will always have a beautiful body that resembles the image of Jesus.
Therefore, we must live a life that actively follows the Holy Spirit. Lawful religious life is as hard as climbing the Himalayan mountains with heavy burdens. No matter how hard we tried, we cannot achieve inner holiness. The inner man does not change. Rather, we have no choice but to bear the fruit of sin. But living a life of faith in the Holy Spirit is like birds flying in the wind. If the birds fly by the strength of their wings, they won't be able fly much. It’s also a tiring thing for the birds. By catching the wind birds are now able to fly freely and far. Likewise, living in faith is a life of flying in the wind of the Holy Spirit. When we live in the Holy Spirit, our life will be joyful and happy that the beautiful fruit of Holy Spirit will grow inside us.
See verses 12 and 13. “Therefore, brothers and sisters, we have an obligation—but it is not to the flesh, to live according to it. 13 For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live.” Humans are spiritual beings. God is happy when we live a life of worship and serving others. Therefore, we must actively rely on the Holy Spirit and kill the behaviors of our body. I pray that we will live a life of loving our God and serving our neighbors by the power of Holy Spirit.
Third, we must be led by the Holy Spirit of God. See verses 14 and 15. “For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.”” Those who belong to Christ must have the Holy Spirit within them. And they live a life led by the Holy Spirit. Those people are the humans who are saved and the sons of God. In the Exodus, the Israelites were led in the desert by a pillar of cloud and fire. The spirit of sonship refers to the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is not the spirit of slave, but the spirit of sonship. Would not the saved people get the judgment of God? They are not afraid it, because they received the spirit of sonship. That’s why God is called ‘Abba, Father’. Slaves are completely different from sons. A slave holds responsibility on his mistakes and may be kicked out. So the slave is always afraid of his master and walks on eggshells around him. But the son is forgiven for making mistakes or doing something wrong. Because of a single mistake the Father cannot say to his son ‘You're not my son from now on’. Even though the son behaves inappropriately, he does not get fired or kick out. So he is neither afraid nor walks on eggshells around his Father. If he needs help, he can ask help from his Father at any time. If we are adopted, we can’t right away call the new parents as our dad or mom. However, when a relationship is created between parents and the adopted children, they can then call their parents as father and mother. When your relationship with God deepens, you can call Him as Dad, Father. Going on the verses 16-17a. “The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. 17 Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ,” The Holy Spirit personally testifies to us and to our spirit that we are children of God. IT helps us to be convinced that we are the children of God. Because of this conviction, we can all God as ‘Dad, Father’. Without the help of the Holy Spirit, God cannot be called as Father. In 1 Corinthians chapter 12:3a, "no one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit.” Calling Jesus as our Lord and God as our Father tells us that we are the children of God. We have the father of flesh. The father of flesh loves his children and sacrifices everything for them. But the father of flesh has a limit on his ability. He can't help his children anymore when he becomes old. Sometimes he hurts his children with wrong love. He can’t solve the fundamental problems of his children’s life. How confident and proud is the fact that the Almighty is our father? The privilege of being a child is to be an heir. Inheritance is not gained by effort, but it is given without value. We are the children of God, the heirs of God, and co-heirs with Christ. Jesus is the king of the kings, the Lord of the whole world, who will come again and reign over the new heavens and the new earth. Then we will reign with Jesus as heirs to the nation. Now, of course, we don't realize that we are the heirs to God. But as our faith grows and our spiritual eyes brighten, we will realize how great and amazing the glory of the kingdom of God is.
In the verse 17b “if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.” A citizen in Sydney, Australia, took a branch of forsythia on his way to Korea. He thought that if he planted it in his yard, he would see yellow forsythia flowers. But the forsythia was full of branches and leaves, and strangely, it didn't blossom. He thought that may be because it was the first year and so he waited 2 to 3 more years to see the yellow flower of forsythia, but he wasn’t able to see them. It was good to know that forsythia could still survive through the flower, which is separated from its stem, but afterward he realize more significant fact. Forsythias, which grew up in Australia without a severe winter, do not blossom, like the Korean forsythia. Not only forsythia, but also for the a bulbous plants such as tulips, hyacinths and lilies, as well as trees like lilacs, are said to have the characteristics of blooming only after they survive in the cold winter. Also, the reason why autumn barley yields more than spring barley is irrelevant. In technical terms, it is called "vernalization." Because they have survived the severe ordeal, they have a strong vitality, so many fruits are held.
It is convenient to live according to the desires of the flesh, but we have to fight spiritually to live a devout life against the desires of the body. This can be tiresome and can bring exhaustion. And in John 15:19, Jesus told his disciples that they would be hated by the world because they do not belong to the world. If we do not compromise with the world and live according to words of the Lord, we will surely suffer. However, when suffering continues, we may feel tired and can be tempt to give up our faith. But the suffering we face on this earth cannot be compared to the glory that will be revealed to us in the future. Suffering is temporal, but the glory is eternal. I pray that we will know this and actively participate in the sufferings of Christ.
In conclusion, religious life is a life accompanied with God. I pray that we can always rely on the Holy Spirit and be led by the Holy Spirit and live more holy life.
