Lesson 12 Matthew 2020
Verses | Matthew 8:1-17
Key Verse | Matthew 8:17

He Took up our Infirmities

"This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah: “He took up our infirmities and bore our diseases.”

We learned last week that it is important to listen and do what God says. Reading the Bible with your eyes is important, but you can read it properly when you understand it with your head and act. We have to read the Bible as life. In today's verse comes Jesus, who cures the sick, such as leprosy patient, a paralyzed servant of a Gentile, and Peter's mother-in-law, who suffers from fever. These are socially neglected people. They are vulnerable people. We all have our weaknesses. We have a weakness that we can't handle ourselves. Jesus comes to us and deals with and treats our weakness. I pray that the mercy and grace of Jesus will come to each of us.

First, Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean(1-4). When Jesus came down from the mountainside, large crowds followed him. People, who heard from Jesus the Sermont on the Mount and were touched, and crowds, who listened to rumors and were more than the time on the mountain, followed Jesus. Then a man with leprosy came and knelt before him and said, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.” The man with leprosy looked horrible because the disease spread all over his body. Leprosy was considered the most dangerous disease in Jewish society because it is strongly epidemic. Leprosy is a scary skin disease that occurs in hot and humid areas. Leprosy corrodes not only skin but also nerves and cartilage, causing fingers and toes to fall off and nose to rot. The eyebrows will fall out and eyes will be blinded. Leprosy destroys nerve cells, causing the body to rot without feeling any pain. When the body touches the ice, it doesn’t know that it’s cold, or when it touches the fire, it doesn't feel hot. Feeling pain is a blessing. You need to feel pain to realize the danger and avoid disasters.

It is mental pain that with leprosy is more unbearable than this physical numbness. Since the leprosy infects through injured areas, patients were isolated from people. They have to part up with their family and live alone in a dark cave. The law defines leprosy as unclean disease (Leviticus Chapter 13, 14). An 'unclean disease' means a disease caused by sin and the curse of God. In the Old Testament, there are those who have sinned and become leprosy patients under God's curse. If they get leprosy, they were banished from the Israeli community. They cannot live as God's people and are abandoned by God and society. So the leprosy man tore his clothes, loosened his head, covered his lips when he went down the road, and shouted "Unclean, unclean" to keep people from approaching him. People threw stones so that the patients couldn't approach them, because they didn't even want to encounter these leprosy patients. Above all, leprosy was an incurable disease, so the patients couldn’t have hope to recover. They had no choice but to live senselessly and helplessly in the midst of despair.

But this leprosy patient had hope when he heard that Jesus would cure all kinds of sick people. He came out with the hope that he could be changed through Jesus, and fell on his knees and begged for it. “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.” He suffered a pain that was not accepted by many people. He seems to have spent a lot of time wondering whether Jesus would accept him and treat him or if it was good to live like this. So he said, "Lord, if you are willing". There is an idea that he has been cursed by God, and he is asking if Jesus wants himself to come forward with faith. Also, he had a faith of being cured by Jesus’ will, even though he was devastated by leprosy all over his body.

If a common person gets infected by the incurable disease, he refuses it. Why me? It takes time to admit that he has a disease. Afterwards, he blames God and struggles, then, he accepts the disease. He tries to cure illness from various ways. Then he gets tired, discouraged, and despair. Satan constantly puts this disappointment in our hearts. He tempts us to give up. We have to fight with this Satan. The patient went through this process, but he believed in Jesus and had a wish. The most important thing in solving life problems is the earnest desire and belief to be solved. When we hold on to the word of God, overcome our disappointment, come to Jesus and seek for Him earnestly, the Lord will work on us.

See verse 3. “Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!” Immediately he was cleansed of his leprosy.” Jesus can cure leprosy patients just by talking. But Jesus reached out His hand and touched the man. Touching the man with leprosy was prohibited by the law. If you touch the unclean, you will be unclean. However, Jesus did not become unclean, but cleansed him. When Jesus touched the man’s body, the thoughts and wounds of being abandoned disappeared as a melting snow. The man felt like he was being treated as a human being. He knew that he was respected even though he had leprosy all over his body. His heart became warm by Jesus' love.

And Jesus said, “I am willing. Be clean!” Jesus really wanted the man, who was half-believing whether it was God's will to be better, to live a healthy life after being clean. When Jesus said, "I am willing. Be clean!" the leprosy immediately was cleansed. His body changed into soft and healthy like a child's skin. Not only that, but also the mind and soul became clean. If Jesus touches the unclean man, the man will be clean. This is because there is healing power in Jesus. Now the man became a new creation in Jesus. He became a person of the holy God.

See verse 4. "Then Jesus said to him, “See that you don’t tell anyone. But go, show yourself to the priest and offer the gift Moses commanded, as a testimony to them.”” He wanted to show people his changed self and promote Jesus. But Jesus told him to live with the grace and not to tell anyone. But He told him to show himself to the priest. In doing so, he restored his status as a people of God and entered the community of Israel (Leviticus Chapter 14). He restored the man’s low self-esteem and helped him lead a healthy social life.
Leprosy has a similar nature to sin. Just as leprosy causes the body to be damaged and rotted and smelly, sin rots our souls and destroys the image of God. The more you commit sin, the less guilty you become. Sin loses the beautiful image of God in man and makes him ugly. He gets cursed by God due to sin. Jesus came to this earth to purify us from these sins. He was crucified in order to take charge of our sins. If our hearts are sick from sin, we must go to Jesus. The Lord purely forgives all our sins. To purify sin is to lose hatred and to have love, to be a sacrificial person from selfish, to be humble from arrogant, to be holy from worldly. Jesus forgives our sins and makes us humble, gentle, growing love, holy, true, and righteous.

Second, Jesus (5-13), who healed the servant of the centurion with only words. When Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion came to him, asking for help. “Lord,” he said, “my servant lies at home paralyzed, suffering terribly.” The centurion was in charge of leading hundred Roman soldiers, a powerful person in Roman society. At that time, Roman soldiers were famous for being rabid. They oppressed the people of Israel, the people of the colony. But the centurion of the text was a man who feared God. He loved the Jews and built a synagogue for them (Luke 7:5). He came to Jesus and begged him to cure his servant's illness. In that moment, the servants were part of the property that the owners could buy and sell at will. It was customary to throw away or to give them money to live on their own, if the servants were useless of being sick. But this centurion was different. He loved his servant like his child. He treated a servant as a person. The servant might got ill due to being touched by master's love, sacrificing with all his heart, and being loyal to him. The stroke paralyzes the body and makes others tired. Now the servant became useless. But the centurion did not abandon his sick servant and tried to cure him somehow. Although the centurion was a Gentile, he came to Jesus with a love for his servant.
When Jesus heard the centurion's supplication, he immediately answered, "I will go and heal it." Jesus knew that the centurion was a precious person who feared God and had humanity. It is surprising that the centurion's supplication moved Jesus' heart, but something more amazing happened. See verses 8 and 9. “The centurion replied, “Lord, I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed. 9 For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and that one, ‘Come,’ and he come. I say to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it..” The centurion said he couldn't handle Jesus coming into his house. As a gentile, he knew well that he could not associate with God's people. Above all, he knew that Jesus is holy and that he is a humble sinner. He is a centurion, but he knows that Jesus is the power of the spiritual world to drive away disease and ghosts. So Jesus said he couldn't afford to enter his house. He confessed that he would be better off just to speak without coming home.

He absolutely believed in the power of Jesus' words. He was convinced even the word of Jesus has the authority to go beyond space and time and heal the servant. The most important thing in the life of faith is faith and awe in God's Word. When we are in awe of God's Word, we can listen to it and obey it. Listening to God's Word creates faith, and by obeying the Word, we experience God's power and learn what God is like.

He learned the authority of the commands (words) through his military life. The army is a society that lives on orders and dies on orders. When the military commander gives orders, the officers must advance against the enemy even if their lives are in danger. While living in the military, this centurion absolutely obeyed the orders of his superiors. The men of centurion also moved according to his instructions. He recognized Jesus as the spiritual commander-in-chief. The centurion knows that Jesus also drives away the ghosts. Likewise, he believed that giving the Words of Jesus to the sick could heal the servant.

How did Jesus praise the centurion's faith? See verse 10. When Jesus heard this, he was amazed and said to those following him, “Truly I tell you, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith.” He was amazed by the faith of centurion. He said that none of Israelites had this kind of faith. It is the belief that if we just say 'this kind of faith', it will be done as it is. He knew that Jesus was the power of the Word. As a Gentile, he didn't have a proper life of faith and couldn't learn the Word systematically, but when he heard rumors about Jesus, he knew exactly what he was like. He had great faith that word of Jesus will become true. Jesus is the Creator who made heaven and earth with the Word. The word of God came down to the word of mouth and was passed on to us as the written word. The Holy Spirit works with the Word and still works miracles in believers. We must learn and obey with reverence for God's Word. We have to read it into our lives. At this time, we will enjoy God's presence and live a prosperous life with heavy words and actions. Not only is it recognized by God, it is also recognized by people and exerts good influence.

Through the faith of centurion, Jesus saw the vision of the salvation for the Gentiles. See verses 11 and 12. I say to you that many will come from the east and the west, and will take their places at the feast with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven. 12 But the subjects of the kingdom will be thrown outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” In the kingdom of God, a history takes place where the last shall be first, and the first last. Many Gentiles from the East and West will return to God and will take their places in Heaven with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. But arrogant Jews will be will be thrown outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. The kingdom of God is not a place of descent or human condition, but a place of faith. Jesus blessed the centurion, “Go! Let it be done just as you believed it would,” the servant was immediately healed. When we believe in God's Word, we end up wandering in life and discover our mission and purpose in life. A person who is helpless and unconfident becomes a person of vision and a person of passion. A person who couldn't even cover himself will live as a shepherd who feeds and saves our family.

Third, Jesus healed Peter's mother-in-law's fever (14-17). Jesus came into Peter's house and saw his mother-in-law suffering from fever. Peter was married and had a wife and was a fisherman, but he was called by Jesus and abandoned everything and followed him. Peter's wife and mother-in-law may have been dissatisfied with Peter. It would have been difficult for Peter to live at home because he was not engaged in work. Peter was anxious when his mother-in-law had a fever. Jesus went to the atrium knowing Peter's situation. Jesus helps his disciples with a deep interest in their life and family problems.

See verse 15. “He touched her hand and the fever left her, and she got up and began to wait on him.” Jesus touched Peter's mother-in-law's hand with a fever and healed it. When her mother was healed, she rose immediately and made food to serve Jesus and his disciples. This is an expression of gratitude. Since then, she must have actively support Peter to follow Jesus.

See verses 16, 17. “When evening came, many who were demon-possessed were brought to him, and he drove out the spirits with a word and healed all the sick. 17 This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah: “He took up our infirmities and bore our diseases.” When the sun was about to set and the Sabbath ended, people brought many demon-possessed people to Jesus. Jesus had pity on them, and “by the word” cast out demons and healed the sick. Jesus' words had the power to heal the sick and drive out demons. Matthew interpreted Jesus' fulfillment of Isaiah 53:4 as the event that cast out demons and healed the sick. Also, the event that the ghosts were driven out and the leprosy was cleaned shows that the kingdom of God has come.
Jesus came to earth to take up our infirmities and bore our diseases. Jesus has already taken away our infirmities and sickness. This leads to a life of a strong missionary. Isaiah 53:5 says, "But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed.” People seem strong, but they are weak. They are vulnerable to disease. They are so fragile that they can't withstand stress, explode or even become depressed. Because it is weak, it is 3 days. Because of their weakness, they are tempted by sin and fall well. He was weak, unable to keep the word of God, and lost the power to do good. A fragile person is easily discouraged. When difficulties come, you lose courage and live a helpless life.

So how can we escape this infirmities and disease and live a healthy life? First, we must deeply admit that we are living a weak and sick life because of our sins. And we must confess with our words, believing in our hearts that Jesus took care of our weaknesses and carried our sicknesses. As a leper, we have to ask the Lord to draw our image that will become perfect. Like a centurion, we must believe in the power and authority of Jesus' words and pray humbly. Jesus helps us to escape our weakness and disease. In 2 Corinthians 12:9, the apostle Paul said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect from weakness, so I will boast of my weaknesses with great joy." "The ability is to make me stay." Because of our weakness, the love and power of the Lord remain in me. I pray that we can live a life where the power of the Lord is revealed by our weakness rather than trusting and living our own strength. When the Lord carries my weakness, His power is revealed. Praise the Lord for taking care of our weaknesses and forcing us to live with his power.
