YOUR KINGDOM COME
Luke 11:2 "He said them, 'When you pray, say; "Father, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come."'
I. Moving to new mission field
God sent my family to St. Louis on May 1st of last year to pioneer Washington University in St. Louis. The only thing that I could do since we moved to a new mission field was kneel down and pray to God for his daily direction. Even though the summer break started in each campus the same week of our arrival, God led mi to visit the campus almost every day and plant the seed of prayer for the future of God's ministry. For the last ten years of life in Chicago UBF, I had no problem making any decisions because I had many servants of God and senior missionaries who gave me proper advice and direction. But in St. Louis, I had to make every decision all by myself through prayer. Thus, God began to discipline me to depend on him through prayer at the initial stage of pioneering ministry.
My family had the first worship service on May 2, 2004. The message was based on Romans chapter 5. The attendants were my wife Mary Choi, two kids Grace and Samuel and my mother who came from Korea to help my family. During the worship service, my wife was crying with many tears. I didn't know why she was crying, but I believe that she was moved by my message. Anyway, God blessed the first historical worship service in the rented apartment near the Wash U. campus
1. One-to-one ministry
On Memorial Sunday, Dr. Jim Rabchuk and all WIU coworkers visited us and joined our worship service. They encouraged us with special songs, testimonies and many gifs. I felt strong spiritual unity in Christ among cowokers. The following Sunday after their visit, God sent a Wash U. student, Scott Lyon to worship service. Even though Scott had no regular one-to-one relationship with me, he attended the worship service from time to time. My family was greatly encouraged by Scott's coming and accepted it as a sign for God's blessing on Wash U. pioneering ministry.
I thought getting one-to-one sheep from Wash U. might not be difficult. It was because I was the only one who went out for fishing and didn't have to struggle or compete with other coworkers. However, it was not the case. The first day of the new semester in Wash U, I found that more than 50% of the students are Jewish. In fact, more than half of students I contacted in Wash U. said that they were Jewish. For a while I became a depression patient thinking that I got the wrong campus. However, God sent one or two Wash U. students to worship service and gave me hope and vision for being a shepherd for the Jewish Wash U. students. When I did not despair and prayed continually, God sent several one-to-one sheep at the end of semester such as Stuart Figrad and Jonathan Edward.
God also drove me out for fishing to the University of Missouri in St. Louis during the summer break and sent one faithful sheep Nathan Hunton. Even though Nathan did not come to the worship service, he joined my fishing trip three times and shared his weekly testimony faithfully for the last seven months. God sent two other one-to-one sheep from UMSL such as Patrick Heckor and Tom Helton during the fall semester. We pray that God may raise one ancestor of faith and 12 disciples of Jesus from among UMSL students, too.
2. Message preparation
As a messenger of God's word, I had to struggle with the Bible passage from the early days of the week. As God trained me in Chicago UBF, I struggled to memorize the Bible passages by Wednesday night, to have personal study with Dr. Lee's manuscript on Thursday, to finish the first draft by Friday night, to revise it on Saturday until I sent it to Shp. Tony King in Chicago UBF form English proofreading. This routine was repeated every week and God helped me to finish Romans study and start Matthew's Gospel messages after the MSU conference. However, I was still lazy in digging out the word of God and frequently wrote my own ideas instead of revealing God's word itself. I pray that God may mold me all the more as a servant of God's word, and as one approved who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of the truth.
II. New directions for 2005
I struggled to receive a new year key verse for the last two months, but God did not give any special verse to me. I accepted it as God's will for me to hold my pioneering key verse newly which is Luke 11:2, "Your Kingdom Come." Since I moved to the new mission field, I have been praying that God's kingdom may come into the hearts of Wash U. and UMSL students. My wife and I prayed that God's kingdom might be extended in two campuses through our one-to-one ministry. Nevertheless, my prayer and fishing ministry did not meet God's standard. Frequently, I compromised my limited situation and did ot go for fishing. I easily despaired when Wash U. students rejected my invitation. Mainly, I struggled with bad tenants in the Bible house and wasted unnecessary energy to control my temper. So, this year God wants me to work hard all the more for expanding the territory of the kingdom of God in the hearts of young students through diligent one-to-one Bible study.
Through the MSU International Conference, God newly taught me that the kingdom of God comes through faith in Jesus Christ. The kingdom of God comes when a sinner repents of his sins and receives forgiveness of sin and accepts Jesus as his personal Lord and Savior. Man is truly happy when the kingdom of God comes into his heart. God wants me to go out diligently to expand his kingdom into the hearts of Wash U. and UMSL whether they are Jews or Gentiles. I pray that God may use me and my family all the more to raise one Abraham of faith, 12 dedicated disciples of Jesus and 120 flock of God's sheep from Wash U. and UMSL. Personally, I pray for 12 regular one-to-one sheep from each campus. May God bring his kingdom into the land of St. Louis through my family. Amen.
