Lesson #4
In The Beginning
Genesis 1:1-25
Key Verses 1:1
"In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth."
1. Look at verse 1. Who was "in the beginning"? What time does “the beginning” refer to? What does “the heavens” refer to? What is the “earth”? What is the significance of the word “created”?
2. Read verse 2. What was the state of the earth before God began his work? What does it mean that the earth was formless, empty, dark and deep? What was the “Spirit of God” doing? How was the Spirit of God involved in the Creation? What can we learn about the work of God’s Spirit?
3. Skim over the entire passage. What instrument did God use to create the world (cf. 3, 6, 9, 11, 14, 20, 24, 26; Heb 11:3)? How many times do you find the phrase "and God said...and it was so"? What does this suggest about God and His word? How can this truth apply to our lives?
4. Skim over the passage again. What did God create on each day? Why did he create things in this order? How does this apply to our lives?
5. Notice the other repeated phrases like "according to their kinds", "and God saw that it was good". What do these expressions tell us about God? About the world he created? What can we learn about ourselves here?
